Is Stella McCartney an Eco-Hypocrite?
Stella McCartney, the English fashion designer, is reportedly in the hospital giving birth to her fourth child today. We’re happy for the not-new Mom and wish her family the best, but then again, isn’t she supposed to be a huge environmentalist? And she’s having her fourth kid? What now? The designer is an outspoken vegan and advocate of animal rights, but she’s also very into promoting an earth-friendly agenda. On World Environment Day, her West Hollywood store was turned into an eco-party, where she told the audience via tape-recording: “L.A., you drive too much. Take a walk. Ride the bus.”
Her advice is sound, but her child-bearing habit seems a little inconsistent with her eco-minded attitude. Population growth is often cited as a significant cause of environmental decline, suggesting that those of us with access to birth control might be well-advised to put a cap on the size of our families (just like we should the size of our cars, homes, and serving sizes of meat).
Congratulations, Stella, but perhaps it’s time to find some vegan condoms?
