Infographic: Energy Consumption By State (How Embarrassing)

Most people agree: Performance reviews suck, especially when you’re forced to look at your numbers in comparison to coworkers’. But there’s no question that knowing how you rank compared to your office nemesis definitely whips you into shape. We think that’s what Good is getting at with Transparency: America’s Appetite for Energy, an infographic that compares energy consumption by state, providing some rather embarrassing information about the environmental impact of some of our home states.
Not surprisingly, Texas takes the cake for highest total energy consumption, but there are some other surprisingly high spenders on the chart. Take Washington state, for example: You don’t even need air-conditioning in the summer, so what are you doing with all that energy out there?
Although the chart reveals high energy use in most states, we really wish that they’d come up with a chart that reflects energy used per capita; sure, New York state consumes a lot of BTUs, but it’s also home to a much higher head count than, say, Alaska, which seems pretty eco-friendly when you don’t consider what a tiny population is responsible for the state’s entire energy expenditure.
Now we want you to take a long, hard look at this infographic and then go home, and think about what you can do to improve your performance in 2011. With your lights off.
