5 Productive Things to Do On a Snow Day

Guess what? It’s snowing. Or it’s going to snow. Or it’s been snowing for a while and there’s no indication that it’s going to stop anytime soon. Ever. Though we Blisstree staffers live in the heart of urban New York City, where snow days for working adults are as rare as an empty cab at 5 p.m., we’re very envious of those of you who live in cold-weather climates and have bosses who actually tell you not to come into the office because of a snowfall. And if this latest snowstorm pans out, you lucky folks may well have some snow day free time on your hands very soon. (In between sledding with your kids, and making them grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup, and hot chocolate, of course. Did we mention that we’re jealous?) So here are five productive ways to spend your next snow day, which will likely be tomorrow. And probably the next day. Us? We’ll be at work no matter what the weather, but we’re damn well at least going to buy ourselves a friggin’ hot chocolate.

1. Shred all your unnecessary documents.

This may take all day. Then recycle all that shredded paper (as soon as the snow melts) or save it to use as packing material in boxes. A perfectly green snow day.

2. Take out all your yoga and fitness DVDs and work out to one of them.

Especially if you don’t own snowshoes, cross-country skis, or a snowmobile.

3. Sort through clothing and items to give away.

You may need several snow days for this one, which is fine, because there are still eight more weeks of winter left. The Salvation Army, a homeless shelter, or a local church should be happy to take your hand-me-downs. You may just have to wait until spring to deliver them.

4. Once you’ve cleaned out your closets and drawers, completely re-organize them to increase their functionality.

Take frequent breaks for hot chocolate and to check in on your soap operas.

5. Catch up on all your phone calls and emails.

Just remember that everyone else will be home having a snow day, too – so don’t call anyone you don’t actually want to talk to, because they’ll likely pick up the phone.
