10 Ways to Lower Cholesterol Without Prescription Drugs
Statins — the cholesterol-lowering drugs that significantly reduce risk of future heart attack — are a boon to the health and life span of anyone with heart disease (or high risk for heart disease). In fact, they’re so beneficial that researchers are busy trying to figure out if those at low risk for heart disease might benefit from taking the prescription meds. But after reviewing the progress of 14 medical trials, researchers at the Cochrane Systematic Review found that for those of us who have low risk for heart disease, statins may not prevent heart disease at all.
Now, we’re all for taking vitamins and supplements that boost our ability to fight disease and illness, but when it comes to prescription drugs — shouldn’t we focus on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle instead of finding drugs to keep our arteries intact while we continue scaring Big Macs and Diet Cokes? There are several known ways to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, and maintain healthy levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and a vast majority involve simple diet and lifestyle choices (not pricey prescription drugs). So while researchers spend time calculating whether taking prescription drugs to prevent a disease we’re already at low risk to contract, we’ll stick with our oats and vegetables, thankyouverymuch. … More »

Pets and Health: Expensive, And Not Necessarily Beneficial
In the last few years, there’s been a proliferation of warm, fuzzy studies telling us about the health benefits of cats and dogs, but an article in yesterday’s New York Times, “Fido’s No Doctor. Neither is Whiskers.,” gave a reality check about just how much we should expect from our pets. Hal Herzog, a psychology professor at the University of North Carolina, explained that for all the research touting the health benefits of pets, there’s nearly as much that indicates they don’t. The problem, he says, is that researchers haven’t delved into how we actually interact with pets. … More »

Obesity and STD Rates Rising In American Women
Check out this post about a recent women’s health study on That’s Fit.
While fewer American women are smoking and dying from heart disease and stroke, there have been disturbing setbacks in women’s health in the U.S. over the last decade.
The newly released 2010 edition of Making the Grade on Women’s Health: a National and State-by-State Report Card, developed by the National Women’s Law Center and the Oregon Health & Science University, showed that more women are suffering from obesity, high blood pressure and sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, more women are engaging in riskier behaviors, like binge drinking and failing to obtain regular health screenings for conditions like cervical cancer. … More »
