Oscar Curse: 10 Best Actresses Who Won Academy Awards, Then Divorce Cases
The 83rd-annual Academy Awards are Sunday, February 27, but current Best Actress nominees who believe they’re happily coupled may want to think twice before accepting that precious career-friendly gold. A new study from researchers at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and Carnegie Mellon University found that Oscar winners in the Best Actress category are at a higher risk of divorce than nominees who don’t win. On the flip side, Best Actor winners apparently don’t experience this potential pitfall. Researchers concluded that when the traditional role of “breadwinner” is reversed (i.e. the woman starts to earn more money than her partner, or earns a major award), the relationship experiences a strain that’s often irreconcilable. The study looked at 751 nominees between 1936 and 2010: Turns out, Best Actress winners are 63% more likely than nominees to see their marriages end. The median marriage length for winners is just 4.3 years, while losers (kidding!) enjoy a 9.51 year relationship duration. This year’s married or engaged nominees who need to start worrying include Annette Bening (to Warren Beatty), Nicole Kidman (to Keith Urban) and Natalie Portman (engaged to choreographer Benjamin Millepied). Perhaps it’d be better for everyone’s marital status if an unattached Best Actress nominee like Michelle Williams or Jennifer Lawrence unselfishly collected Oscar gold this year. Here’s our top ten list of formidable actresses over the years who watched their Hollywood marriages disintegrate after (and maybe because of) their Oscar victory and subsequent major career boost: … More »

Gallery: 10 Hollywood Celebrities Helping to Save the Planet
Whether they’re putting their star power or their money (or both) into projects to protect and save the earth, or just help make it a better place for all of us to live, Hollywood celebrities have a long history of supporting environmental programs and projects. (And the good PR doesn’t hurt their careers, either.) And while it’s all too easy for spoiled celebs to end up in rehab or make the news for less-than-noble antics (Mel and Charlie, this means you), the ten who made our gallery are doing the opposite — setting a good example for others by living environmentally-conscious lives, and encouraging the rest of us to do the same. Here’s who and how: … More »

Gallery: 10 Celebrities Who Shill for Health and Beauty Products
It’s no secret that every time you turn around, another poor, indigent Hollywood celebrity is trying to help sell impressionable consumers another health, beauty, or fitness product in order to pad their already-flush bank accounts. (Movies and TV are for amateurs; they make their real money from endorsements, people!) Can you recall all the celebrity faces of Estée Lauder? (Elizabeth Hurley, Gywneth Paltrow, and Freida Pinto, to name a few.) And what about Cover Girl? (Queen Latifah, Drew Barrymore, and Taylor Swift.) And then there are the perfume ads: Nicole Kidman and her Moulin Rouge-esque mini-films for Chanel No. 5 a few years back; and today Charlize Theron strips down for Dior’s J’Adore fragrance in the name of smelling good. And, of course, cash-strapped professional athletes shill for every kind of energy drink and sports apparel imaginable (David Beckham for Adidas, Michael Jordan for Nike, Derek Jeter for Gilette, Michael Phelps for Speedo). We can only hope that these stars actually use the products they’re hawking (they do get them for free, after all), as they endorse their hefty endorsement checks. Click through our gallery of ten more Hollywood celebs who sell their souls in the name of health and beauty products, and find out just how much some of them make doing it: … More »

2010 Celebrity Divorces: 12 Star Splits
It’s time for 2010 retrospectives, and why not get the bad news out of the way first? Eva Longoria and Tony Parker are officially filing for divorce, acting as the (hopefully) final reminder that 2010 has not been a good year for celebrity marriages. Al and Tipper Gore’s 40 year union significantly pulled up the median duration of marriage for the year’s divorced celebs, but we are also astounded by how quickly some of these couples went from wedded bliss to courtroom splits. … More »

9 So-Called Green Celebs With Too Many Kids: Are These Famous Moms and Dads Eco-Hypocrites?
When Stella McCartney gave birth to her fourth child last week, we wondered if her child-bearing record makes Stella an eco-hypocrite — does having four kids really match up with her environmental advocacy? Some readers disagreed with the logic, citing her ability to pay for her offspring and applauding her for raising more like-minded, earth-conscious children, but other readers agreed that, despite her eco-friendly words and vegan fashion designs, at the end of the day, four kids per family simply isn’t eco-friendly. … More »

9 So-Called Green Celebs With Too Many Kids: Are These Famous Moms and Dads Eco-Hypocrites?
But if you’re unluckly enough to have an annoying relative who plops down next to you on the couch to watch one of these films and constantly asks: “Who is that?”, “Wait…did he just kill someone?”, “I don’t get it…are they a couple?”, or “Is that Julie Andrews or Shirley Jones?”, I’m afraid you’re on your own. Which is why I highly recommend alcohol. (And headphones.)

Strangers With Pipe Cleaners: Q&A With Amy Sedaris, Author of Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People
Ever since the crafting hobby went all hipster and began to consume the free time of mommy bloggers and third-wave feminists, I’ve been trying to muster up some interest in macramé, felt, and alpaca yarn. The allure of this trend still eludes me, but for wackadoo actress, author, and comedienne, Amy Sedaris, crafting is simply an extension of her reinvention schtick.
A few years ago, Amy made us eager to immediately procure a crockpot when she authored her first book, I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence. However, it seems that all this time she may have been dying to answer the question of how best to entertain yourself when the guests finally go home.
Her newest tome, Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People, will instantly make you an expert insider of “outsider” art, with instructions on how to make everything from a toupee doorknob to a rusty nail wind chime. … More »
