Oscar Curse: 10 Best Actresses Who Won Academy Awards, Then Divorce Cases

The 83rd-annual Academy Awards are Sunday, February 27, but current Best Actress nominees who believe they’re happily coupled may want to think twice before accepting that precious career-friendly gold. A new study from researchers at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and Carnegie Mellon University found that Oscar winners in the Best Actress category are at a higher risk of divorce than nominees who don’t win. On the flip side, Best Actor winners apparently don’t experience this potential pitfall. Researchers concluded that when the traditional role of “breadwinner” is reversed (i.e. the woman starts to earn more money than her partner, or earns a major award), the relationship experiences a strain that’s often irreconcilable. The study looked at 751 nominees between 1936 and 2010: Turns out, Best Actress winners are 63% more likely than nominees to see their marriages end. The median marriage length for winners is just 4.3 years, while losers (kidding!) enjoy a 9.51 year relationship duration. This year’s married or engaged nominees who need to start worrying include Annette Bening (to Warren Beatty), Nicole Kidman (to Keith Urban) and Natalie Portman (engaged to choreographer Benjamin Millepied). Perhaps it’d be better for everyone’s marital status if an unattached Best Actress nominee like Michelle Williams or Jennifer Lawrence unselfishly collected Oscar gold this year. Here’s our top ten list of formidable actresses over the years who watched their Hollywood marriages disintegrate after (and maybe because of) their Oscar victory and subsequent major career boost: … More »

Facebook Status Updates May Be Hazardous to Your Emotional Health

It’s mind-boggling that one in every 13 people who walk the Earth is on Facebook. This 24/7 show-and-tell of how a user is feeling, what they’re doing, who they’re dating, and of course photo albums showing their amazing life is usually a fun distraction for a while. But when you’re battling the blues, being subjected to your friend’s chirpy, happy, status updates can get really annoying. And, according to TIME, a recent Stanford University study says that logging too many hours on the social networking site when you’re feeling down can be detrimental to your emotional well-being.

The study claims that feelings of worthlessness, resentment, and anxiety are heightened when faced with your friend’s perky pictures of smiling children and exotic international travel, but that users don’t know the whole story behind their peer’s polished profiles. … More »

5 Productive Things to Do On a Snow Day

Guess what? It’s snowing. Or it’s going to snow. Or it’s been snowing for a while and there’s no indication that it’s going to stop anytime soon. Ever. Though we Blisstree staffers live in the heart of urban New York City, where snow days for working adults are as rare as an empty cab at 5 p.m., we’re very envious of those of you who live in cold-weather climates and have bosses who actually tell you not to come into the office because of a snowfall. And if this latest snowstorm pans out, you lucky folks may well have some snow day free time on your hands very soon. (In between sledding with your kids, and making them grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup, and hot chocolate, of course. Did we mention that we’re jealous?) So here are five productive ways to spend your next snow day, which will likely be tomorrow. And probably the next day. Us? We’ll be at work no matter what the weather, but we’re damn well at least going to buy ourselves a friggin’ hot chocolate. … More »

HealCam.com: Social Networking for Sick People?

In a (presumably) more sanitized version of popular chat-cam site ChatRoulette, MedGadget recently launched HealCam.com, a social networking hub for people with common ailments to show off their assorted wounds, swellings, and pink eyes on streaming video. “Does this look infected to you?” can now be answered authoritatively by complete strangers.

HealCam is, of course, just the latest tech spin on the age-old approach to wellness and healing: Having a support system in place to offer unprofessional advice. There’s definite comfort in knowing that someone out there shares your list of ailments, though message boards can perform the same function without looking into the possibly-unpleasant face of mutual (and unsightly) illness. … More »
