Life Coach Laurie Gerber on How to Keep New Year’s Resolutions
There’s always debate over New Year’s Resolutions: One woman’s path to self-improvement is another woman’s waste of time. We’re cynical about the goal-setting ritual (and so are more and more experts and role models of success; even Oprah says she’s ditched resolutions). So we interviewed an expert – the president of Handel Group’s private life coaching division, Laurie Gerber – to find out whether it’s possible to make resolutions without failing (or turning our lives into scary versions of self-help books). Here’s what she has to say to us skeptics: … More »

Top Celebrity New Year’s Health Resolutions
We have a morbid curiosity about celebrity New Year’s Resolutions: Whether they’re totally out of touch with reality or just completely self-indulgent, they’re usually entertaining enough to keep us flipping through magazines or scrolling through online interviews. Remember Gwyneth Paltrow’s 2010 resolution, sent to her fans via GOOP newsletter last year? We love the idea of learning how to meditate, but reading her announcement was like watching a train wreck — we wish we had the willpower to look away … More »

Oprah Doesn’t Do New Year’s Resolutions
Whether you love or hate Oprah, you have to admit: She accomplishes a lot. So what are the new year’s resolutions behind the queen of talk? None. In a recent interview with Wall Street Journal, Oprah advised not to make any new year’s resolutions for 2011: “I don’t make them, because I live in the space that I’m in right now,” she told WSJ. “I move with the flow, live in the moment.” … More »

Resolutions: Is a New You Necessary This New Year?
It’s nearly time to start counting down to 2011, and there’s no getting away from headlines declaring that in the new year, you can find a new you. Some of us make resolve to get more organized or go to the gym more often, but are we really striving to reinvent ourselves? We hope not. Starting with a fresh calendar and (hopefully) refreshed mindset makes January a great time for resolutions, but we also think the end of the year is a good time to take stock of what we like – and don’t want to change – about ourselves.

An Australian survey recently revealed that the country’s top New Year’s resolutions in 2011 are to shed weight and debt . Those aren’t uncommon goals among people we know, either; in fact, the list of top resolutions in Australia looks a lot like our own (except when they resolve to get fit, they can actually head outside while we’re stuck avoiding the snow). … More »

5 New Year’s Resolutions Not to Make
If you poll ten people about New Year’s resolutions you’ll probably find five who make them every year and five who think they’re silly or pointless. I’m in the former group. I rejoice in resolutions and encourage my clients do the same. But there’s a method to resolution-making: You need to make resolutions that are realistic – not revolutionary. Here are my five resolutions not to make, and what to do instead: … More »

Pre-New Year’s Resolutions: Will You Dial Back Your Holiday Gluttony This Year?
Exactly one week from now, all of your rational ideas about calorie intake will rapidly fly out of the window in honor of Thanksgiving, and chances are, so workout routine, health rules, and alcohol consumption limits. The day of gluttony that kicks off the holiday season certainly won’t be the last between now and 2011: You’ll encounter table after table full of roasted meats and fatty gravies, carb-heavy sides served with a generous wallop of butter, and irresistible bacon-wrapped hors d’oeuvres. There won’t be any shortage of booze (or hung-over mornings spent appeasing your throbbing head with eggs and sausage), either. So is it time to dig out your fat pants and find a “flowy” dress to flatter your holiday cheer, or time to make some pre-New Year’s Resolutions?
