Facebook Status Updates May Be Hazardous to Your Emotional Health

It’s mind-boggling that one in every 13 people who walk the Earth is on Facebook. This 24/7 show-and-tell of how a user is feeling, what they’re doing, who they’re dating, and of course photo albums showing their amazing life is usually a fun distraction for a while. But when you’re battling the blues, being subjected to your friend’s chirpy, happy, status updates can get really annoying. And, according to TIME, a recent Stanford University study says that logging too many hours on the social networking site when you’re feeling down can be detrimental to your emotional well-being.

The study claims that feelings of worthlessness, resentment, and anxiety are heightened when faced with your friend’s perky pictures of smiling children and exotic international travel, but that users don’t know the whole story behind their peer’s polished profiles. … More »

How to Solve Your Problems While You Sleep

Dream Doctor Kelly Sullivan Walden has some thoughts on how important dreams and dream recall can be to your health.

It doesn’t seem so strange that most artists I know are avid dreamers. Perhaps by virtue of their profession (and ability to wake up leisurely in the afternoon without the blaring sounds of an alarm) they have a natural respect for dreams. However, it is the logical people in my life — the math professors, accountants, lawyers, and suit-and-tie wearing professionals who get up at the crack of dawn with an earth-shattering alarm who don’t seem to recall their dreams, nor do they seem to put much stock in them.

But we all dream, and we all have problems. In fact, one way of looking at life is that it is a constant stream of problems to solve (or, for the Pollyannas of the world, we call them “opportunities”). And don’t we all want to be better problem solvers? Wouldn’t being an expert problem solver make even the most logic-based among us more peaceful and productive? … More »

How to Get a Straight Answer From Your Psychiatrist

Check out this post about communicating with your psychiatrist by Dr. Daniel Carlat on AOL Health.

Have you ever been in a situation where you’re talking to a psychiatrist and you just can’t decide whether to take the prescribed medication or not? It’s not that you don’t trust your doctor — it’s just that some medication decisions are complicated, especially for psychiatric disorders. Perhaps the data on the effectiveness of a drug isn’t crystal clear. Maybe the side effects sound scary. Or maybe you just don’t want to see yourself as a person who needs psychiatric medications. … More »

5 Complex Questions About Self-Improvement for Real Simple (A Women’s Magazine We Actually Like)

Unlike most women’s magazines out there, Real Simple is one we actually like. But unfortunately, while life is always real, it’s rarely ever simple. So we cornered an expert, Danielle Claro, Real Simple‘s Editor-at-Large, to ask her five tough questions about the realities and fantasies of trying to simplify one’s life — during the holidays and beyond. Here’s her simple, yet smart (and sassy), advice.

Blisstree: Like millions of other readers, we really like Real Simple (in print and online). But here’s what we wonder: Are there some things in life that can never be simple, no matter how hard we try to simplify them? We’re thinking of moving, death, and divorce, but what do you think is absolutely NOT real simple?

Danielle Claro: Well, everything can be simple and everything can be really complicated. It’s that “see the world in a grain of sand” thing. So yes, death and divorce are complex. But, when challenged, I can reduce even my most painful experiences to six words. And I could probably talk for an hour about the weird specific shapes on different people’s fingernails, you know? And so could we all. Moving, however, is never simple. Period. More »

5 Complex Questions About Self-Improvement for Real Simple (A Women’s Magazine We Actually Like)

Now, all of a sudden, it’s late November again, and despite my desire for a new pair of boots and a coffee table for my living room, I’m struck by the urge to scrounge up a charitable donation that’s become so well-timed to the holiday season. Am I a bad person for having such inconsistent motivation to help others? Am I the only one who’s so lazy during the other ten months of the year? I’d like to think that everyone else is a better Good Samaritan than I am, but something tells me I’m not unique in my start/stop pattern of giving/non-giving.

But if you’re unluckly enough to have an annoying relative who plops down next to you on the couch to watch one of these films and constantly asks: “Who is that?”, “Wait…did he just kill someone?”, “I don’t get it…are they a couple?”, or “Is that Julie Andrews or Shirley Jones?”, I’m afraid you’re on your own. Which is why I highly recommend alcohol. (And headphones.)

Are Dutch Women Happier Than You? Ja.

Check out this post on women’s quality of life in the Netherlands by Maureen Dempsey on Lemondrop.

According to a recent DoubleX article on Slate, Dutch women have cracked the work-life-balance code. They are happier, well-adjusted human beings who “work half days, meet their friends for coffee at 2 p.m., and pity their male colleagues who are stuck in the office all day.”

They would pity me, too. Two weeks ago, I started a full-time job after three years of work-from-home freelancing. (I have chronic grass-is-always-greener syndrome.) They would most certainly pity me as I worked up a sweat speed-walking home from the subway in order to capture every last remaining minute of the day with my 3-year-old and husband.

Do the Dutch possess the answer? Can women really have it all, or are we attempting the impossible, as these underemployed European women prove?

That’s the deal here in America. … More »
